My cousin Paul sent me a link to this Canadian organization, so I've been looking at the information on each of the women involved in it. The goal of one of the founders: "To create a Canada where demand for abortion dwindles and decreases until there is none left, not because it was forced upon anyone but because that is what women choose."
I think they may be onto something. Before Roe v. Wade, I heard of back-alley abortions; girls trying to end their own pregnancies by dangerous means; and girls hemorrhaging to death, following an abortion. Even if we were to succeed in rescinding Roe v. Wade, I seriously doubt abortions would cease, and I fear that we'd be back to the old methods.
But I am strongly opposed to abortion, especially when used casually as a method of birth control, as it so often is. Maybe we prolife citizens, especially Christ-followers who are supposed to be "salt" (no pepper!) and "light," need to focus on making other options more attractive and workable.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers offer compassionate help and support to unwed mothers-to-be. No one should have to go through such traumatic times alone, but so many turn instead to the well-known (publicly-funded) organization which promotes abortion as the only acceptable solution to the "problem" of pregnancy. Remember the criticisms hurled at Governor Sarah Palin, because she had not aborted Trig, her Downs Syndrome baby? When did aborting a fetus because it had a defective gene or chromosome, or because the girl or woman wasn't "ready for motherhood," become a virtue?
I have no confidence that we will ever overturn Roe v. Wade. If we are ever to end the atrocity known as abortion, I think we need a different approach. Maybe these women in Canada have the right idea.
